Chapter 22

My phone rang as I pulled into a parking spot half a mile away from Luke’s concert venue. Annie and I were already running late, and we were in for a fast walk in heels if we were going to make it on time. But it was Joel, so I had to take it.

“Hi!” I answered and climbed out of the car, ignoring Annie as she pointed to the time on her phone. I’d waited through her forty-five wardrobe changes before she finally settled on jeans and a basic black T-shirt. She could wait a few minutes while I talked to Joel.

“Hey. What’s up?”

No matter how many times I reminded myself Joel was only a friend, my heart never listened. The sound of his voice always made it beat faster. “Annie and I are headed to a concert.”

Annie grabbed my hand and pulled, forcing me to speed walk with her.

“That sounds fun. How’d you get Annie out of the house?” His voice echoed, reminding me how far away he was.

“Luke’s band is opening for another group she likes, so he invited us to come. Actually, she’s been going out a lot lately. Plus, she’s working. I hardly ever get to see her.”

Annie glared at me, but when I mouthed Joel’s name, her brow smoothed and she went back to pulling me down the street.

“That’s good to hear. I’m glad she’s feeling better.”

Of course he was, because he was a friend. A good friend. “Thanks. What are you up to?” I yanked my hand out of Annie’s and slowed down. We were almost there, and I didn’t want to end my conversation with Joel.

“Well, I’ve got Becca with me—”

“Hi, Emily!” Becca interrupted, and I realized he had me on speaker. With his ex- (maybe not anymore) girlfriend.

“Hi,” I answered, not even trying to match her enthusiasm.

“Joel has been keeping me updated on how everything is going, and I can’t wait to see it.” Becca kept talking, and the world started spinning.

“Becca wants to come with me when I visit.” Joel’s words came out slowly, carefully.

Everything stopped. Except for Annie, who left me behind.

“I hope that’s okay,” Becca added while I tried to process what Joel had said.

“Of course,” I answered automatically. “We’d love to have both of you.” I forced myself to start walking again. The sooner I got to the club, the sooner I would have an excuse to hang up. I just had to make it before I said something stupid.

“When can we come? I’m dying to see all the changes we talked about.” Becca’s bouncy voice left me deflated. I knew she didn’t mean to, but she’d stolen all the excitement I’d felt when I answered Joel’s call, and now she was taunting me with it.

“Next month is probably best.” The club was still half a block away, but the loud music pouring out of it gave me the reason I needed to hang up. “I’m here, so I’d better go. I’ll give you a call in a couple days to work out details.
